This is the artist who’s achieved extraordinary success from the most terrible of circumstances.
Matthew Rutherford wasn’t expected to survive after a car crash left him with severe injuries to his brain, limiting his ability to speak.
To help him communicate, he was encouraged to take up painting. And the results have been stunning.
”My name is Matthew, I suffered a traumatic brain injury after a car accident in :
2010 and can now no longer speak. I have aphasia and epilepsy, so I can’t communicate like most people, so I turned to art. I have some very hard days but when I paint, I feel happy. I sometimes spend all night painting, with my cat Chips to keep me company.
In 2021, I received a lot of press attention for my artwork and have been on both BBC and ITV news (local and national) and have appeared in newspapers.” – Matthew Rutherford
This coverage saw people getting in touch wanting to buy my art from all over the world; one of my pieces was shipped to Australia!
Exhibited at the coveted Brick Lane Gallery in London, the Derby Arts Museum amongst others.
Jane Winfrey, a picture specialist at Bonhams, has said: “Matthew regularly sends me images of his latest paintings, usually with a one word explanation.
The work is usually bright, bold and contains an important message. The message conveyed in paint is a way of self-explanation. For Matthew they illustrate a journey explaining an event which altered his life. His works reminds me of artists such as Alan Davie and Marc Chagall; artists who painted a spiritual journey of discovery through their own individual universe” All my artwork are one-off pieces, I do not sell en-masse nor do I make any copies. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
The one off pieces are available to purchase today Find the works in Room 2 of the House of Antiques Ilkeston.
